Life is a series of new beginnings moving us through seasons, life transitions, new places and situations. But sometimes we become stuck for all kinds of reasons—inertia, depression, grief, and sometimes just overwhelmed by choices. The labyrinth is an ancient and powerful tool for transformation— a spiritual practice that opens the door on the imagination, helps us to honor our path and to conceive of new directions. We will focus on how we move past our inertia and nurture the emergent new life as it begins its tentative steps forward. We will use the labyrinth, creativity, imagery, journaling and story to explore where we are on our individual journey and move toward healing and wholeness.

Lisa Gidlow Moriarty, is an artist, spiritual director and professional labyrinth maker. She is an internationally recognized presenter with a passion for leading others in use of labyrinths in the spiritual journey. Lisa designs and installs labyrinths for schools, hospitals, churches and individuals, and has made well over 100 labyrinths, across the USA and beyond. Lisa travels internationally to explore the ancient labyrinth and provides workshops, tours and presentations on the history and use of labyrinths in a variety of settings. She is past president of the international Labyrinth Society (www.labyrinthsociety.org) and owner of Paths of Peace (www.pathsofpeace.com) in Stillwater, MN

Life rarely happens as desired or planned. Detours and surprises are the stuff of living. While many such detours are disappointing, others shatter dreams and can throw people off their usual resilient responses. Becoming a widow or widower is a profound disruptive change that alters lives.

During this workshop, participants will explore how to respond during times of unexpected transition and loss. The session will include ways utilize their strengths and the resources of others in facing change and transition. Resiliency is more than self-care. While that is crucial, attention to meaning-making and reasonable hope deserve attention.

Join us for this experiential workshop where you will have time for group discussion and questions and answers.

The Gathering registration begins at 11:30 am with the program beginning at noon. Refreshments will be served. (Please note due to the time of this Gathering, we will not be serving lunch.) The Gathering is free to attend but preregistration is requested to ensure enough materials and food.

Join us to learn new healing tools, make new friends and see old friends, have fun and take a break to be with those who understand the widowed journey.

Grief and How We Carry It: telling our stories

“It’s not the weight you carry,” the poet Mary Oliver says of books and bricks and grief, “but how you carry it.” When loss breaks our hearts open, how we carry the weight of our grief matters. In this day retreat, we’ll explore our experience of grief and how the stories we tell can make a difference in balancing the heft of our sorrow. With storytelling, guided writing, interactive activities and sharing with one another, we’ll consider the way grief moves in our lives and how we carry it, honoring the loved ones we’ve lost while supporting our need for healing.

Rev. Karen Hering is a chaplain and consulting literary minister and author of the award-winning book, Writing to Wake the Soul: Opening the Sacred Conversation Within, named one of the best spiritual books of 2013. She leads retreats and guided writing sessions for writers and nonwriters alike, inviting participants into a correspondence with their own heart and their own sacred truths. Her programs have been described as “sacred, safe and illuminating.” No writing experience is necessary.
